DLC Calls For An Increase In Pensions And A Widow Support Grant
According to the Bill of Rights, Section 27 (1) (c) of the Constitution reads : Everyone has the right to have access to social security, including, if they are unable to support themselves and their dependents, appropriate social security. Social grants are key to the survival of many households. Currently Pensioners are getting a “RAW” deal in terms of their social grants. A social grant of a mere R1700.00 is literally an insult to the pensioners for their sacrifices they have made in building a solid democratic platform for us in South Africa. A pensioner cannot survive on a mediocre pension when their entire pension is spent on their electricity and water bill. Studies have proven that the poverty baseline for an indigent person is R3500.00 which takes care of the basic necessities
Widows are also a forgotten sector whom have not been taken seriously by the government. A Widow Support Social grant must be considered for widows whom have not received any income and/or benefits from their late spouse estate. Municipalities must be directed to incorporate Widows into their Rates Rebate policies, hence treating the widows as equals.
